renters for political transformation
OUR VISION
Renters for Political Transformation is a 501(c)(4) aiming to create, sustain and grow a political home for renters across Minneapolis. We come together to demand transformative housing policies that shift the power in the housing market from the financial sector, back into our communities and neighborhoods. We mobilize renters as a political class and a key voting block, united in commitment to the struggle for a city, state and world where renters live in health, justice and dignity.
together, We are building a renter coalition of voters in minneapolis.
Our city is a city of renters. We need elected officials who answer to us — not landlords, developers, corporations, and the lobbyists who represent their economic interests.
In preparation for the 2025 City of Minneapolis Elections, we are organizing tenant leaders in buildings that are majority Black, Indigenous and People of Color. These tenant leaders are working with their neighbors and making plans to elect candidates aligned with a bold, progressive housing policy agenda — one that identifies the failures of the current system, and lifts up alternative solutions that challenge increased commodification and privatization of housing.
We organize to challenge a long-standing housing policy landscape that bolsters private profit at the expense of our neighborhoods. To do this, we need candidates for public office to know they cannot win an election in Minneapolis without us — a unified coalition of renters with a clear vision of Homes For All.
what are we fighting for?
In addition to individual elected officials at the City level who support our vision, we need a unified progressive governing coalition that is sincerely accountable to our base of working-class people of color in Minneapolis. By accountable, we mean politicians who are committed to using their governing power to address the material needs of our multiracial working-class renter base.
We are building a renter voting block pushing politicians to secure strong legal protections for tenants, and bold policies that fundamentally challenge the design of the housing system & address the root causes of our citywide lack of affordable housing — policies such as:
Social housing
We are fighting for locally-owned housing, also known as social housing, across Minnesota. This is housing that is permanently affordable, democratically-controlled, and stewarded by public agencies or tenants themselves,
Our vision for Social Housing includes maintaining and funding existing public housing; supporting renters in building housing cooperatives; and creating pathways for cities & counties to build, own and manage permanently affordable housing.
Rent stabilization
We need a strong rent stabilization policy in Minneapolis that protects renters from disruptive and unpredictable rent hikes, imposed by landlords who value profit over people. This includes capping rent increases at X%…..
permanent moratorium on encampment sweeps
Evicting encampments is an unjust, ineffective and unacceptable policy response to the root cause of homelessness: a citywide shortage of deeply affordable housing. Alongside demanding an end to sweeps, we advocate for policies that center the autonomy and dignity of all people, regardless of housing status, and use every possible lever to guarantee homes for all.
